This site is dedicated to documenting
all of the known animal wildlife that
inhabit the New Jersey Pine
Barrens,
also known as the New Jersey
Pinelands
National Reserve.
If there are any animals you are
aware of that do not appear on the website,
please feel free to contact me, and
I’ll gladly add it to the website.
A Brief Introduction
The New Jersey Pinelands National
Reserve is the first established National
Reserve in the United States, created
by Congress under the National Parks and
Recreation Act of 1978. It includes
seven NJ counties and more than 1.1 million
acres of land, making it home to
22% of NJ’s total land area. For more
history visit NJ
Pinelands Commission.
From dense forests of pine and oak to
hardwood swamps to pitch pine lowlands and
even marshes, the NJ Pine Barrens is
home to an array of vegetative habitats.
This area contains more than 850
species of plants, including rare orchids
and carnivorous species, and over
12,000 acres of “pygmy forest,” an area of
dwarf pine and
oak less than 11 ft. tall.
All of these conditions combined make
for a wonderful ecological system where
various different animals can be
found. As it currently
stands, the Pine Barrens is home to at least
39 species of mammals,
300+ species of Bird,
59 reptile and amphibian
species, and 91 fish
species. However, we are
always looking for new species!
Bear in mind that the NJ Division of
Fish and Wildlife lists 43 of these species
as threatened or endangered (click here
to view the full list). It is imperative
that we respect all of the animals in
the Pine Barrens and their respective
habitats so as to not unnecessarily
endanger them and ruin this pristine
environment.
Our Mission
Our mission at PineBarrensAnimals.com
is to document all of the animal species
found in the NJ
Pine Barrens.
This is an ongoing effort that includes
myself, photographers, scientists,
wildlife connoisseurs, amateur
wildlife enthusiasts, and you!
It's unlikely that I will be able to
find all of the known animals species in
the area so if you find something that
I haven't found and would like to share it
with us, we'd gladly accept it.
In addition, we hope this website will
be used by educators throughout New Jersey,
and internationally (we'll keep our
fingers crossed), to educate students of
the importance and elegance of this
natural environment. Some teachers have
told us that they use the Pine Barrens
Reserve as a teaching lesson to introduce
different ecological topics such as
marine life eco-systems, plant life, and
other forms of animal life. At the end
of the day, the students benefit by
learning about science and NJ's very own Pinelands
National
Reserve.
